What manufacturing jobs do you want back? The high-end ones in arms manufacturing and aircraft production you are just losing? Same with European politicians - we have 2025 not 1975. The world and the economy has changed.
Yes, America can only go after high end manufacturing like military equipment, which Trump has also destroyed. Even before the destruction it was a sector begging for new workers as it faced a wall of retirees.
And then we can add in destroying basic scientific research or even applied in areas like materials science. These won't employ millions of folks without a high school education but it will create lots of really good jobs.
Trump wants to effectively monetize the debt, which is a form of soft default. But even if his economic instincts were more directionally correct, the Fed's independence is way, way more important to the confidence of the market than policy ephemera.
The purported goal of this trade war is to bring manufacturing jobs back to USA, which is a decent enough goal. The way Trump has handled it, is the proverbial bull in china shop. There is no plan, no strategy, no details. Sources claim that Trump was fixated on tariffs and trade balances back in the 80s, so I believe he is just airing old grievances.
My sympathy for the hard working staff's work related injury. Here in Australia we're uneffected directly (we import more than we export to America) but will suffer enough from the damage he's done to the community. But I'm financially secure enough to be safe and have chosen to enjoy seeing a fool make an even bigger fool of himself and reflect that as he won the popular vote America can take the damage and suffering he's going to inflict on them. Perhaps it will make people wiser next time.
The polls suggest the most likely event is a minority government lead by the current centre-left government but there's still a fair degree of uncertainty.
Australia will suffer a lot from the devastation infllicted in the region from Trump's tariffs, but we'll probably get off lightly compared to some. We export a lot of iron ore and coal to China which will probably be needing a lot less of it.
China banned a lot of Australian exports 5 or so years ago in a fit of pique with the former government. We found new markets and eventually China backed down but memories are strong. We'll probably stick neutral about trade blocks. But if the US wants Australia to join them in a trade block against China we'll probably tell it to be sexually active elsewhere. We're not as anti-American as some countries but even in Australia US's stocks have taken a pretty big hit in the last few months.
Dan I can understand how reading Politico would want you to bang your head against your desk. Politico has been the village cryer for the lizard people inside the beltway since the Washington Post has become little more than a supermarket tabloid. May I recommend The Hill as they have a codray of young, thoughtful, educated staff writers, most of whom were the editors of their college newspapers. that don’t take everything so seriously. In addition, Politico publishes thinly vailed directives designed as new stories. Stories that are in fact direction from the puppet masters that control the deep state actors. Actors that carry out the will of their handlers within the beltway. Again Dan, you really should spend some time learning how Washington works, it would keep you from banging your head so much and might lessen the number of headaches you experience.
Secondly, the round 🎃 pumpkin will change his mind, tear up agreements, lie, cheat, steal and extort. He cannot be trusted so why would any country align with or put their “eggs” in the US basket when the mindset changes with tomorrow’s wind?
Of course this is sheer insanity and we don't even have a way to calibrate Trump's actions when he's enraged about something or other.
It sure as hell didn't help trade, Democrats or Hillary Clinton when she disowned TPP because she's a yella' bellied sapsucker and was terrified that unions might not vote for her.
Does anyone out there have a guess at how much capital Trump has destroyed in his career. We can start with the $6 Trillion of losses from the market meltdown recently.

Well, given that Donald Trump’s brain is frozen in 1982, this all tracks. He’ll be slapping tartiffs on Czechoslovakian cars any day now.
On a somewhat related note, the market meltdown that's going to happen when Trump fires Jerome Powell is going to be epic.
Trump can crab all he wants, but he can't fire him.
He can try, which will likely be enough to destroy the bond market.
Don't see how. Trump wants the Fed to lower rates, which will help the bond market.

Not seeing a thing about this, but you can link if you like

[In Yoda voice] Chaotic, corrupt, and incompetent, Trump international trade policy is. Obama trade policy, sabotaged by Rs was. And so, here are we.
I hope that the hard-working staff there at Drezner’s World will quickly recover from their exasperation-induced headache. 🤕

Question for you: What's your view on the outlook for your upcoming election and your economy?
Do you imagine that all this trade turmoil will bring Australia closer to China?

Okay one, fat chance.

Trump's fighting two opponents. China and their ilk, and our own multinational investors. Fair trade hurts them.
