The passing of the previous orders has generally been accompanied by lots of violence. And now that Trump and the Right have killed nuclear nonproliferation, well, I’m wondering how hard it would be to move to Australia.
You ask what the new world will look like? It’s not hard to believe that the China will be the predominant power. China isn’t doing the stupid things the U.S. is doing. It’s not as feckless as Europe. It’s not as 19th Century as Russia. India and Brazil will join its alliance. But you’re also very right: what will replace the international “order”: the U.N., the IMF, etc.? Or will China just take the U.S. seat at the head of the table as the U.S. tumbles into deeper internecine squabbles or annexations?
Before you hand China the crown take a look at fertility rates. TLDR? China’s TFR is collapsing. TFR is below replacement in the US too, but we have a secret weapon: immigration. Almost alone among major countries we accept (legal) immigrants and, one generation later, the kids are Americans. That can never happen in China.
I think that post is good but I feel like a lot of people are fed up with the United States and its failures in Iraq, Syria, Ukraine and now Gaza. We can’t bomb our way out of our crisis, people die and the bad guys still triumph. I have no idea personally what the best way forward is but we seem to drifting towards isolationism. But that’s not realistic because we need to have a positive influence and not let Xi and Putin run the show globally!
