A wise and balanced article. In all truth even when America was absolutely the only world super power there was limits on what it could achieve. Other countries have interests of their own and don't automatically decide everything according to the wishes of a distant super power. It's an obvious point and it's a little sad that it needs to be said....Keep up the good work Professor!

Yeah, the US should stick to strategic interests. That would be East/SE/South Asia, Europe, the Americas, and Africa in that order.

Once oil stops mattering (which would be soon), there is zero reason for the US to care or meddle in the Middle East. Let India Europe, (or China, if they want to) deal with that mess. That area of the world just has zero bearing on the US. How does what Iran or Israel do affect the US? Why do we even have allies there?

With regards to the Middle East it occurs to me that when demand for oil is heavily reduced, a lot of oil rich states are going to discover that not very many people in the world likes them very much. I picture with malice the Saudi elite discovering that.

Possibly, but that’s more a concern for KSA’s neighbors. Why is the ME anything of concern to the US once oil stops mattering?
