Supporting rightist armed forces in Latin America in the 1980's led to failed states and mass misery in the 2000's which led to mass emigration from Latin America (and immigration into the United States) in the 2010's and 2020's, leading to xenophobia in the USA and then to Trump. Now, Trump can start the cycle all over. The future "populist" president-for-life of 2040 thanks you, Mr. Trump, for paving his path to power!
Maybe if someone gave him a map that wasn’t Mercator he’d leave Greenland alone. That said, though they’re patriotic Americans, maybe Danish citizenship would be a draw for some Puerto Ricans.
I rather fear that many millions of Americans who voted for Trump are about to be played for fools. I can't see Trump resisting the tempation to use tarrifs, despite his claims he would lead to lower prices.
I don't know if any IR people have written about this but....In his first term he maybe was non-interventionist in the sense that the things that made previous Presidents intervene are things that he and all Republican voters are indifferent to or actively hostile to. Democracy promotion (hypocritical or not), preserving US alliances and the global trading system, human rights, avoiding a species-ending pandemic, etc. Interventionist vs. non-interventionists framing assumes that the motivations for intervention are self-evident and unchanging. He does seem to have 19th century mercantilism and racial bullying down, but none of the rest.
It’s more than a bit bizarre that Trump may be serious on this threat. Presumably someone complained to him about shipping charges but you make an excellent point that this is one of his threats that he might actually consider.
The madness of King Donald redux...not even in office yet, and the gobshite hasn't shut up for one day already...and of course the media once again rushing in to breathlessly report on every verbal tic...oy vey!
Excuse me? "Gonna"? America has been a MUCH bigger bully than China for decades. That's why BRICS is winning whilst American oligarchs destroys the advantage democracy seemed to have.
And here I thought a major tenet of MAGA was "anti-globalism," whatever that is supposed to be. Maybe Trump is just another variation of American Exceptionalist after all.
I hate to give Trump any credit, but it's possible to imagine his words about Panama are a bargaining chip--do more to turn back refugees at the Darien Gap and I'll shut my mouth about Panama Canal fees. Maybe a dream before Christmas?
The problem, imo is t_g is more a proponent of appeasement than being anti-war; think Neville Chamberlain and not Mahatma Gandhi. If he was truly anti-war he might be less inclined to support war mongers like Bibi, Kim, Putin and Erdoğan.
The one dim hope is that Trump will realise Netanyahu has conned him and the US for decades. He was Bibi's chump last time. Within months of him supporting annexation of Golan Heights, "Trump Heights" was launched on this land stolen from Syria. Have sales gone well enough for Jared's dream of Club Trump in Gaza?

Gonna be awkward when America becomes the bully it accuses China of

Outrageous territorial claims seem tailored to deflect attention from the recent Musk/congressional disaster

Any chance his motivation is that he's being sued in Panama for non payment of taxes and violating employment rules?
No.
That couldn't possibly be the motivation.
Invading Mexico would certainly result in Mexico launching a special ops campaign in the border states.
Trump is loudly, consistently anti-war. If he keeps us out of wars, that's how history will judge him.
