Although an Australian I follow American politics closely and this is as cogent a piece of political analysis as I've read. It might have mentioned that one bit of policy that Trump has explicitly championed is to put very large tarrifs on all foreign imports. I don't think Republicans would like that idea to get lots of media coverage!

While I've been heartened by developments in the last month I'm still shaking my head that a sitting Vice President can be seen as the candidate of a fresh change. I suppose all things are relative and Trump is surely old news.

Do any Republicans have any real policies to talk about besides the self-serving kind?

Excellent piece. Just to emphasize one point/question: while Project 2025’s publication may have been cloistered (for now), presumably its recruitment of sycophants for a Trump/Vance administration has not. And that may be the more nefarious component since all of them now have the 900+ pages in hand as their policy guidance.

👍👍 Reality shows, like most other entertainment, have to figure out how to keep their audiences engaged The writers' room for the Reality Show Party has come up with new material, but it test-screens terribly. So, the RSP is stuck with off-putting lead characters, tired material, and stale shtick. In contrast, there's new and attractive counter-progeammng available.with a click of the remote: new leads, new scripts, and an appealing throughline. Should be no contest. Maybe, ultimately, it won't be. Fingers crossed...

They certainly don’t want a man with a well-known aversion to reading and critical thinking to try to talk about policy.

It seems like Project 2025 is a dog’s breakfast; some of the policy might have real support, and might be written by people who could be hired to implement it. And also, some grade A nuts got into the mix - people who have some online weight or a connection, but aren’t going to be hired to make policy. I’m reasonably confident that Donald Trump is not going to hire the guy wearing a giant crucifix who wants to ban porn. (If anything, Trump might somebody from the UFC to write a bill requiring every man to watch heterosexual porn for an hour a day.) It would be interesting to see some reporting on who these characters are and how they got in.

"Trump campaign are now trying their darnedest to obscure their most articulated policy vision for the next GOP term. I speak, of course, of Project 2025" Trump has unambiguously disavowed any connection.

The NBC headline says it all. "Trump disavows Project 2025, but..." blah blah. Trump disavows Project 2025. That's a fact. The "but" is just partisan speculation.

It would be nice if Mrs. Harris and Mr Walz outlined for us their policy vision for the next four years. At least Mr. Trump speaks with the press on occasion.

When you go from being the #2 to being the principle on a ticket, I’d hope you are going to diverge from the former #1’s policies somewhat. Given that MS. Harris has been at the top of the ticket for about 3 weeks, giving her a moment between solidifying support for her candidacy, choosing a running mate and introducing herself as a person - again - to the country might have some bearing on why she hasn’t sat for an interview yet. As her campaign has stated, they are planning for a joint interview with Ms. Harris and Mr. Walz around the DNC, which starts on the 19th. Chill. I’m sure her policy positions will be made public in short order.

Fair enough. A reasonable counter is that early voting begins in about 6 weeks. It would be nice to see the candidates’ views pressure tested for more than a couple of weeks before people start voting.
