This is the slippery slope of how it started in the Indian press, when Modi came into power. Negotiating with themselves, pre-emptively diluting or blocking coverage in fear of repercussions, moving into softball coverage and now finally just hagiography stuff. They're called 'Godi Media' for a reason. 'Godi' means 'lap', à la 'lapdog'.

The Washington Post, my hometown paper, that used to be one of the two recognized papers of record, is now dead. Canceled my subscription to WaPo AND Amazon Prime ronight. I feel anxiety and grief about it, but fuck Jeff Bezos, an entitled, dishonorable rich jerk coward who managed to ruin a once great institution.

I've wondered for the past few months if the normalization of Trump practiced so often by the major media was just paranoia on my part. Now I'm remembering a comment ascribed to Henry Kissinger that even a paranoid can have enemies. Hopefully this bears out the comments I've seen that this will backfire and highlight the self-censorship already starting. The irony of this action and the Post's heading concerning Democracy and Darkness hits hard. It's certainly just another "normal" election that leads an institution to sell its soul like this.

I've heard the term "anticipatory obedience" used to describe this phenomenon. It's disappointing. to say the least --- 'despicable' or 'reprehensible' is more like it.

And so Jeff Bezos books his room in the vestibule of Dante’s Hell, a place reserved for moral cowards. How many will follow?

So as an electronic subscriber, should I be cancelling my subscription today? I live in the area, want to support the journalists, and would miss the electronic form dearly, but... My God. I'm also lucky in the range of other fine resources available to a Marylander, including the Baltimore Banner and any number of web publications.
