It’s sad. Twitter, while smaller in active users, performed very real and valuable functions in information dissemination by verified journalists and people in public positions. Musk clearly didn’t understand that at all, or that this was how experts were found quickly when things were happening. And so he hollowed it out.
Twitter is a giant shit show since Musk took it over, but it’s always chosen to not devote adequate resources to combat online bullying, hate speech, veiled threats, and maintaining election integrity. That was true when allegedly free speech specialists ran the place. Before 2022 they had to their dubious credit enabling white supremacists and neo-Nazis, the boosters of several genocides, Iranian, Chinese and Russian state propagandists, and of course years of Trump’s polarizing March toward setting the US on fire and attempted coup.
Musk is garbage, but Twitter has always chosen maximizing profit and minimizing combating threats to democracies and human rights.
May be interesting to you to know that Putin has funded neo-Nazis and white supremacists all over Europe, such as Golden Dawn in Greece, Le Pen in France, and of course the openly Neo Nazi PMC Wagner of the Russian Federation. But I get the feeling you’re not against Neo Nazis or White Supremacists.
Currently he's protecting the world from the ADL and boosting antisemitism and racism, but perhaps after creating a super-app he'll turn that charming attitude around.
