The Saudis are able to play an effective double game with Trump, not supporting US military access to Saudi airspace or bases during the Iran war — a war ostensibly fought to prevent nuclear proliferation in the region — while at the same time negotiating a sweetheart nuclear proliferation deal for itself. Good gig if you can get it. I wonder why it works?

Presumably that is to reduce the risk that Israel will bomb them to protect their nuclear monopoly in the region. All of this makes so much sense that you have to assume that Trump and entourage are trying to make a lot of money and that is really the only thing this is about.
Or maybe someone pointed out to Trump what Drezner pointed out here: “a nuclear agreement was one of the carrots that the United States could offer the Saudis to normalize relations with Israel,” and Trump gave up that bargaining chip. What’s clear is that Trump made a deal with the Saudis and announced he was walking away from it less than 24 hours later. He’s an utterly unserious negotiating partner.
Trump does not care about Israel, and he certainly does not care about the Gaza genocide and the ethnic cleansing of the Palestinians that the USA enables. He only cares about money coming his way. That is the only reliable logic in everything he does.
