We were hosted in Moscow, Leningrad (now St Petersburg) and Novosibirsk by communities of medical scientists. We also had the privilege of home visits with professional colleagues and all were impressed by the interest of the Russian hosts seeking news of lifestyle in the West (me, Australia),and their hope that friendly and co-operative relations could develop. between USSR and all nations. Such a pity that since 2014 cordial relationships appear to be impossible at administrative levels over Western governments and modern Russia.
